Background information
Wilson is a fictional diesel-electric locomotive created by Sarah Ball.
He is one of the main characters of the series, and has appeared since the first episode, Can't Catch Koko.
Wilson is based on an EMD F-Unit, and is painted red with white and blue lining, golden wipers, light frame and eye frames, along with blue wheel trucks.
CGI models
First series model
In 2007, Wilson was designed and modelled by Volume Studios in the 3D modelling software Sketchup during the production of the first series. The model was later exported to another software, Maya, for animation.[1]
When Wilson joined Chug Patrol in the fourth series, a newer model replaced the first series model. Throughout the fourth series, Wilson's first series model was used in scenes in which Wilson was not wearing the Chug Patrol work gear. Beginning with the fifth series, Wilson's first series model was completely retired due to the fourth series model being used for all of Wilson's appearances. However, Wilson's first series model was still used in storyboards of the fifth series.[2]
Modifications
- Series 2:
- He receives the new coupler and trainee plaque design.
- His coupler hatch becomes wider.
- His hinge joints become red.

Fourth series model
In 2012, Wilson's model was revised in order to scale better with the new characters introduced in the fourth series.[4] In addition to proportional changes, the model also received the Chug Patrol work gear and livery, consisting of hazard stripes, a Chug-Com, and a siren. The fourth series model was modelled completely in Maya.
Beginning with the fifth series, a version of Wilson's fourth series model without the Chug Patrol work gear replaced the first series model.

Close-up model
In the second series episode, Wilson's Icy Escapade, a separate model depicting Wilson's controls was required for a specific scene in which Wilson heats up his engine. The close-up model reuses the model of Koko's controls that was used in the Chuggington: Badge Quest episode Ready to Roll.
