Behind the Scenes

This is the behind the scenes subpage for Calley.
This subpage contains all behind the scenes material relating to said article.

Background information[]

Calley is a fictional diesel shunter locomotive created by Sarah Ball.

Until her removal from the series, Calley was one of the most prominent recurring characters in the series, originally serving as the sole rescue chugger. With the introduction of Chug Patrol in the fourth series, Calley became an assistant to the team leader, Jackman.

Calley is loosely based on a Krauss-Maffei ML 500 C diesel-hydraulic shunter and was originally painted orange with a dark green cab and footplate; upon the introduction of Chug Patrol, Calley was painted in the team's signature livery.

Calley has not appeared in the series since the fifth series, but her original CGI model was reused for Tai, a character introduced in the sixth series.

CGI models[]

First series model[]

In 2007, Calley was designed and modelled by Volume Studios in the 3D modelling software Sketchup during the production of the first series. The model was later exported to another software, Maya, for animation.[1]

When Calley joined Chug Patrol in the fourth series, a newer model replaced the first series model.

Upon her removal prior the sixth series, Calley's first series model was modified and used as Tai, a new trainee who works at the Docks. These modifications consist of:

  • A purple and orange livery.
  • Only one horn.
  • The removal of her head and tail-lamps.
  • The ability to turn 360 degress.

Other features of the first series model, such as the warning light, horn, and eye colour, are still present. Calley's first series model was used as Tai's in several storyboards of the sixth series.

Fourth series model[]

In 2012, Calley's model was revised in order to scale better with the new characters introduced in the fourth series. In addition to proportional changes, the model also received the Chug Patrol work gear and livery, consisting of hazard stripes, a Chug-Com, and a siren. The fourth series model was modelled in Maya.

  • Series 4:
    • She increases in size.
    • She is repainted into a red, blue and yellow livery.
    • Her wipers, handrails, window frames, eye frames and eyelids become silver.
    • She gains a "Chug-Com" as well as the Chug Patrol logo on her sides and rear door.
    • Her plaque is removed.
    • Her windows change from grey to sky blue, matching Jackman's windows.
    • She gains a Chug Patrol siren.
    • She gains silver hub-caps.
    • Her chassis now sits on a hinge joint.
    • She loses most of her weathering.
    • Her six headlights are reduced to only three, and the lenses change from teal and red to blue and yellow.
    • She loses her head and tail-lamps.
