“You're white. And green. The fastest trainee ever seen!”
―Emery cheering for Koko

A Pat on the Paintwork is the twenty-fifth episode of the second season.

Plot

After Emery sees Wilson and Brewster win badges, he wants to get badges too. So Hoot and Toot give out "fake" badges. Meanwhile, Koko and Harrison start a race and find that it is a tie! Emery suggests Koko get the High-Speed Badge, so Koko asks Vee, who agrees. Then, Emery has to collect passengers to help cheer for Koko, but Emery is too busy playing "fake" badges, he takes the passengers to the wrong place! Eventually, Koko stops as a result of a lack of encouragement. Emery decouples his coach and cheers Koko on, making her fire again until she wins the badge.

Trivia

  • This is the last episode where Emery is voiced by Troy Doherty in the American dub, but the final time he voices Emery is in the Chuggington: Badge Quest episode, First Things First.
  • This marks the first time someone has earned the High-Speed Chugger Badge.
  • At the beginning of the episode, Wilson and Brewster are shown to be earning badges, meaning that this could have taken place right after a Badge Quest.
  • The title is a pun on the phrase, "a pat on the back".
  • This episode reveals that Emery can remove his back coach if needed.
  • This scene where Koko zooms past Vee was recycled for the Discover Chuggington: All Aboard! short, Koko's Song.
  • The song Old Puffer Pete sings when he's placing the speed detectors would later be heard again in the fourth season episode, Park Patroller Wilson.

Goofs

  • In the American dub, Zephie has Hoot's voice when she shouts out "yippee" for the second time.
    • Toot additionally has Hoot's voice when she shouts "green" near the end of the episode.
  • Towards the end of the episode, Hoot's eyes are shifted to be more visible to the audience. This would happen again in Night Chuggers.
  • When Emery leaves the crossing, all of the other chuggers that were there disappear.
